Stop the Dirty Water Rule

Today, the EPA should be protecting the Clean Water Act and other water-related regulation, not giving away our waters to big polluters. As a member of the Spring Creek Watershed Commission, I am flummoxed by these proposed changes. They pave the way for fish kills and dirty drinking water.

When I was six, our parents told us to stay out of Spring Creek. A nearby chemical plant had been producing Kepone, a pesticide similar to DDT and Mirex. Leaching impoundments afftected Thornton Spring and the stream was impaired. The situation became so bad that the EPA made it a Superfund site. Clearly, bad management, lax laws and poor oversight led to the situation. Today, Spring Creek is an exceptional value trout stream where children experience seasonal cycles and see mayflies hatch.

If the situation were different, and the Trump EPA were to have been in charge, there’s little doubt of Spring Creek’s fate. What a diminished world we would live in.
