As we walk for peace today, I’m thinking about Jillian Robbins again.

Today is Palm Sunday, a day when people celebrate Jesus as the Prince of Peace. While I am not a Christian, I’m joining today’s Peace Walk and praying (in my own way) that we be filled by the spirit of peace, the will to be our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, and to love our neighbors … More As we walk for peace today, I’m thinking about Jillian Robbins again.

What if Jillian Robbins, the HUB lawn shooter, had an AR-15?

Lately, I’ve been thinking about this because I knew a shooter, Jillian Robbins. Not really well. We were in math class. I remember her as a generally quiet and quirky girl who wore flannel shirts and drew pictures of faeries and magical worlds. She painted a really great mural in our school, the Delta … More What if Jillian Robbins, the HUB lawn shooter, had an AR-15?

Game on. We want a just, sane, and sustainable world? Then we are the ones who are going to do it.

“No one can survive in this world without help. No one.” ~ Ser Jorah Mormont, Game of Thrones  On the the night that Donald Trump was elected, I went to sleep feeling like my insides had been carved out. I was stunned. Shaken. Despondent. The next day I woke up more clear-eyed. It was clarifying to … More Game on. We want a just, sane, and sustainable world? Then we are the ones who are going to do it.

My letter to Penn State’s Board of Trustees about our citizens, our land, & the Cottages

Dear Chairman Dambly and the Penn State Board of Trustees, Thank you for your service to Penn State University, our Commonwealth’s storied land grant university. As a servant myself, I appreciate the time you take to … More My letter to Penn State’s Board of Trustees about our citizens, our land, & the Cottages

At some point, we all live downstream from fracking.

When I worked at Kiski, some folks on campus were concerned about the fracking that was happening around us, especially because there were fracking wells around the reservoir nearby. They had good reason to be worried. There were some recorded spills and a handful of citations. Now if you know anything about the gas industry … More At some point, we all live downstream from fracking.

“All my means are sane, my motive and object mad.” Pennypacker v. Ferguson Township

In the last week and a half, I’ve received dozens of emails about Pennypacker v. Ferguson Township. Ferguson and Centre Region citizens concerned about the short- and long-term impacts on our region from the Cottages luxury housing development want the highest court in Pennsylvania to rule on whether the former board violated zoning law. As I’ve written here previously, the Toll Brothers proposed development has been a mess. Citizens are right that the Supreme Court could clarify things by hearing the case. Will they? Who knows? The case has taken twists and turns and the board, to some citizens’ considerable disappointment did not file the answer many asked for. What’s going on? … More “All my means are sane, my motive and object mad.” Pennypacker v. Ferguson Township

The official map engages us with the community & the land

Last Monday the Ferguson Township board moved the official map forward for final vote on June 19th. This planning document helps citizens, planners, township staff, landowners, and developers understand some of the township’s intentions for the next several years and visualize potential futures. We had lots of citizen input that helped visioning with planning staff … More The official map engages us with the community & the land

Penn State joins a grand coalition calling for action to meet goals of the #ParisAgreement

For months, many of us worried that Trump would withdraw from the Paris Agreement. So last week, when it became clear that he would, some of us despaired and some of us resolved to fight even harder. Last November, the organization Second Nature organized an effort for college and university presidents to back climate science … More Penn State joins a grand coalition calling for action to meet goals of the #ParisAgreement
